Snorkelling the Headlands

Rocky outcrops at each end of the bay hold coral and reef fish in the dry season

The rocky headlands at both ends of Surin Bay offer the beach's best snorkelling when the sea is calm — roughly November through April. The rocks shelter small sections of coral and attract a variety of reef fish: parrotfish, sergeant majors, and occasional larger species following the baitfish schools. The southern headland is easier to reach on foot from the main beach; the northern end involves a longer walk along the shore but tends to be less visited.

Visibility can be outstanding in the dry season when there has been little rain and no swell, but drops off quickly after any significant wave action or rain. Bring your own mask and fins if possible — rental equipment from beach vendors is available but not always well-maintained. Avoid the area entirely during monsoon months when surge makes it dangerous and visibility is poor.
