Khlong Hae Floating Market

Southern Thailand's only floating market, open Fri-Sun afternoons

Southern Thailand's only floating market, on a small canal about 6 km north of central Hat Yai. Vendors in flat-bottomed boats sell southern Thai snacks — grilled satay, curried noodles, sweet sticky rice, the famous Hat Yai fried chicken — to crowds eating on the canal-side wooden walkways. The atmosphere is touristy but the food is authentic and inexpensive.

Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from late afternoon (around 3pm) into the evening. Best timed for sunset, when the canal-side lamps come on and the cooking smoke catches the last light. A tuk-tuk from central Hat Yai takes about 20 minutes.

A story
Khlong Hae was created in 2007 specifically to give southern Thai vendors a market in the floating-market style usually associated with central Thailand — until then there was no equivalent south of Bangkok. The boats are all flat-bottomed sampans, and most vendors are middle-aged women who row out from the canal-side villages.
