Wat Phra That Doi Suthep sits near the summit of Doi Suthep, the 1,601-metre peak that looms over Chiang Mai to the west. It's the city's most important temple and most visitors' first day trip. A 306-step stairway flanked by undulating naga serpents leads up to the golden chedi, which is said to enshrine a relic of the Buddha. On a clear day the views over the city, the Mae Ping river, and the surrounding countryside are spectacular.
Getting there is straightforward. Songthaews run regularly from the old city to the base of the temple. From there you can climb the naga stairway or take a funicular. Most hotels and tour companies will arrange a visit, but going independently is easy and cheaper — and means you can linger as long as you like. Early morning is best, before the tour buses arrive.
