Wat Phan Tao

Wat Phan Tao stands directly next to Wat Chedi Luang, but far fewer visitors bother to step inside — which makes it all the more rewarding. The entire viharn (assembly hall) is made of teak, a rare survival from the era when northern Thai craftsmen built in timber rather than brick and stucco. The dark interior is atmospheric, lit by candles and the dim glow through carved wooden screens.

The temple grounds are quiet and shaded. Saffron-robed monks are often visible tending the gardens or studying in the cloister. During the Yi Peng lantern festival in November, Wat Phan Tao is one of the most atmospheric places in the city to watch the sky fill with paper lanterns.

A story
The viharn at Wat Phan Tao was built entirely from teak, using 28 enormous pillars each carved from a single tree trunk. It served as a palace for the northern prince before being converted into a monastery in the 19th century.
