Phayao

Quiet northern Thai lake town with Lanna temples and sunset views across Kwan Phayao.

Phayao sits on the eastern shore of Kwan Phayao, a broad freshwater lake ringed by low mountains. It is quieter than Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, and that is the main reason to come: the town has a slow lakeside rhythm, good evening light, and enough Lanna history to make a day here feel well spent.

The lake is the heart of town. At sunset, locals walk the promenade, food stalls open along the water, and long-tail boats cross to Wat Tilok Aram, a small temple site on an island that was partly swallowed when the lake was expanded. It is a short outing, but a memorable one.

North of the centre, Wat Si Khom Kham holds Phra Chao Ton Luang, a large Chiang Saen-style Buddha image cast in the late Lanna period. Across the lake, Wat Analayo Thipphayaram spreads across Doi Busarakham with forest, temple buildings, and views back over the water.

Phayao is best treated as a pause in northern Thailand rather than a checklist stop. Come for the temples, stay for the lakeside evening, and leave room for a simple dinner by the water.
