Hadrian's Gate

Hadrian's Gate is the main ceremonial entrance into Kaleiçi, the old walled quarter of Antalya. The three-arched triumphal gate was constructed in white marble to honour Emperor Hadrian's visit in 130 CE and is the finest Roman monument in the city. Two of the original towers that flanked it still stand.

Walking through the gate today you pass from the modern city into a different world — the narrow lanes of restored Ottoman houses, boutique hotels, and carpet shops of the old town. The gate is one of the best-preserved Roman triumphal arches in Turkey.

A story
Hadrian's Gate was built in 130 CE to mark the Roman Emperor Hadrian's personal visit to the city — one of several stops on a grand tour of the eastern empire. The three arches were carved from white marble and originally stood free, later incorporated into the city's defensive walls. The wheel ruts worn into the ancient paving stones at the gate's base are still clearly visible.
