Çavdarhisar

High Anatolian village wrapped around Aizanoi, one of Turkey's best Roman archaeological sites.

Çavdarhisar is a small village on the high plateau south-west of Kütahya. On its own it would be easy to pass by, but the village sits inside the ruins of Aizanoi, one of the strongest Roman sites in inland Turkey.

The surprise is how close the ancient city is to daily life. The Temple of Zeus rises almost in the middle of the village, Roman bridges still cross the stream, and the theatre-stadium complex lies a short walk away. UNESCO's tentative listing calls Aizanoi one of the important Roman cities of the period, and that does not feel exaggerated when you stand under the temple's columns.

Çavdarhisar is best treated as an archaeological stop rather than a town break. Come from Kütahya, allow a few hours, and bring a layer outside summer: the plateau can feel cold and exposed even when western Turkey is warm.
