The ruins of Caunos sit on a hillside just across the river from Dalyan, reachable by rowing boat (or a short walk if the water level is low). The site was occupied from at least the 9th century BC and passed through Lycian, Persian, Greek, and Roman hands. What survives includes a well-preserved theatre, a Byzantine church, harbour baths, and the acropolis. It's not on the scale of Ephesus, but the setting — scrubby hillside, the river delta below — is its own reward. Bring water; the site has no shade.
