Ekmecioğlu Ahmed Pasha Caravanserai

The Ekmecioğlu Ahmed Pasha Caravanserai, built in 1609 near the old city's commercial centre, is the best-preserved example of a caravanserai in Edirne. Unlike the Rüstem Pasha Caravanserai which has been converted into a hotel, this one functions as a bazaar — its ground-floor cells are occupied by small shops selling antiques, textiles, and handicrafts, and the atmosphere is that of a working marketplace rather than a restored monument. The building follows the standard courtyard plan, with a central open space surrounded by arched galleries on two levels.

The caravanserai takes its name from Ahmed Pasha, who served as a senior official in the early seventeenth century. Its construction quality is high — the stonework is fine and the proportions of the courtyard are generous — reflecting the continued investment in Edirne's commercial infrastructure even after the capital had moved to Istanbul. Browsing the shops, which mix genuine antiques with more ordinary tourist goods, is a pleasant way to spend an hour. The building is close to the Eski Cami and connects naturally to a walk through the surrounding market streets.
