St George Church

Bulgarian Orthodox church with bright icons in Edirne's historic Kaleiçi quarter

St George Church is one of the quieter historic sights in Edirne, tucked into the old Kaleiçi side of the city rather than competing with the great Ottoman mosques. It was built for the Bulgarian Orthodox community and still carries the feel of a neighbourhood church, with painted icons, timber details, and a scale that rewards a slow look rather than a grand entrance.

It is worth adding to a walk through Edirne because it shows another layer of the city: Bulgarian, Greek, Jewish, and Ottoman communities all left marks here. Come for the interior decoration and for the contrast with Selimiye and the other imperial monuments, which are magnificent but tell only part of Edirne's story.
