The Sukru Pasha Memorial stands on the old defensive ground above Edirne, commemorating the Ottoman commander associated with the city's defence during the Balkan Wars. It is a military memorial, but also a viewpoint and a way into a chapter of Edirne's history that sits outside the usual mosque-and-bazaar circuit.
The site is most rewarding if you have already seen Selimiye and the old centre, because it broadens the story from imperial architecture to the hard politics of the early 20th century. The elevated position helps too, giving a useful sense of Edirne's setting near the borders of Turkey, Greece and Bulgaria.
