Kayaköy

Abandoned Greek village preserved as a haunting open-air museum

Kayaköy is one of the most atmospheric sites near Fethiye — a hillside village of several hundred stone houses, two churches, and a school, all abandoned since 1923. The Greek Orthodox population was expelled during the population exchange that followed the Greco-Turkish War, and the village was never resettled. What remains is a remarkably intact ghost town, designated as a World Friendship and Peace Village by UNESCO.

The village is about 8 km south of Fethiye and can be reached by dolmuş, taxi, or a pleasant walk through pine forest. Give yourself at least an hour to wander the narrow streets and peer into the roofless houses. The upper and lower churches still have traces of frescoes and mosaic floors. The atmosphere is quiet and slightly eerie, especially on a weekday when few other visitors are around.

From Kayaköy you can walk to Ölüdeniz via a marked trail through the forest — about 5 km, mostly downhill, and one of the nicest short walks in the area.

A story
Kayaköy was the Greek Orthodox village of Livissi until 1923, when the Treaty of Lausanne forced a population exchange between Greece and Turkey. The Greeks left, their Muslim Turkish replacements never moved in, and the village has stood empty ever since — a ghost town of roofless stone houses and two churches with fading frescoes.
