Tomb of Amyntas

Spectacular 4th-century BC Lycian rock tomb carved into the cliff above Fethiye

The Tomb of Amyntas is Fethiye's most recognisable landmark — a monumental Lycian rock tomb carved into the cliff face overlooking the town. The facade is designed to look like a Greek Ionic temple, with two columns and a triangular pediment, and it is impressive enough to make you stop and look up from almost anywhere in town.

You can climb up to the tomb itself via a steep staircase (small entrance fee). The burial chamber inside is empty and undecorated, but the views down over Fethiye and the bay are worth the climb. Go in the late afternoon when the setting sun lights up the rock face. There are several smaller Lycian tombs scattered through the cliffs nearby — some are visible from the streets below, half-hidden among the houses.

A story
The tomb's facade imitates a Greek Ionic temple, complete with columns, but it was carved directly into the living rock around 350 BC. The inscription identifies it as belonging to Amyntas, son of Hermagios — probably a local dignitary, not a king, despite what the tour guides say.
