Beyoglu

Beyoglu is Istanbul's 19th-century European quarter turned modern entertainment district. Istiklal Caddesi, the pedestrianized main artery, runs from Taksim Square down to the Galata Tower, lined with ornate embassy buildings, churches, and Art Nouveau facades that recall the district's cosmopolitan Ottoman past. The side streets are where things get interesting — narrow alleys hide meyhanes serving meze and raki, rooftop bars with Golden Horn views, independent cinemas, and vinyl shops. The Galata Tower offers a panoramic viewpoint, but the real reward is wandering the steep cobbled lanes around it, discovering street art and hole-in-the-wall cafes. The nightlife is the best in the city, ranging from jazz clubs to techno venues. Beyoglu feels like it never fully sleeps, and the nostalgic red tram rattling down Istiklal only adds to the atmosphere.
