The Galata Convent of Whirling Dervishes is the oldest Mevlevi lodge in Istanbul, founded in 1491 and rebuilt in its present form in the 19th century. It now works as a museum on the Mevlevi order, with rooms on dervish life, Islamic and Ottoman arts, and the upper-floor sema hall where whirling ceremonies have traditionally been held.
The small graveyard and garden are part of the visit. Look for the detailed Ottoman headstones, including the grave of Ibrahim Muteferrika, who introduced automated printing in Ottoman Turkish.
