Hagia Irene

The oldest church in Istanbul still standing, Hagia Irene sits within the outer courtyard of Topkapi Palace but is often overlooked by visitors heading for the palace itself. Unlike Hagia Sophia, it was never converted into a mosque — the Ottomans used it as an armoury. The austere interior, with its original apse mosaic of a simple cross, has extraordinary acoustics and now hosts concerts during the Istanbul Music Festival.
