Al Shindagha Museum

Heritage-precinct museum telling the story of old Dubai by the Creek

Al Shindagha is the heritage precinct at the mouth of Dubai Creek where the ruling Al Maktoum family originally settled, and the Al Shindagha Museum is an ambitious effort to tell the story of old Dubai through its traditional industries and social history. The complex covers the restored historic district and includes dedicated pavilions on pearl diving, maritime history, spice trading, and perfume-making — the latter incorporating actual traditional distillation equipment.

The museum opened in phases from 2019 and continues to expand. The presentation is slick and well-funded, with multimedia installations and detailed reconstructions. The adjacent Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House and Sheikh Obaid Bin Thani House are separate but closely related heritage sites a short walk away. Entry is free.
