Nghĩa An Hội Quán Pagoda

Ornate Teochew Chinese temple in Cholon dedicated to a deified military leader

The Nghĩa An Hội Quán Pagoda on Nguyễn Trãi Street in Cholon is one of the most elaborate Chinese temples in Ho Chi Minh City. Built by the Teochew Chinese community in the early 19th century, it is dedicated to Quan Công (Guan Yu) — the deified Chinese military general revered both as a god of war and a god of commerce, making him particularly popular in merchant communities.

The interior is rich with carved wooden altarpieces, gilded statues, and coils of incense smoke. The main altar is dominated by a red-faced statue of Quan Công flanked by his two generals; smaller altars fill the side chambers. The pagoda is an active place of worship, particularly busy with Teochew Chinese families on festival days. The dragon-adorned roof visible from the street is one of the most photogenic in Cholon.
