Glen Innes

New England high-country town with Celtic stones, sapphire fossicking, and rainforest drives

Glen Innes sits high in New England, where cold winters, granite country, and old pastoral streets make it feel different from the coast. The town leans hard into its Celtic ancestry, but the surrounding country is the real reward: sapphire creeks, waterfall roads, and rainforest on the run east toward Grafton.

Start with the Australian Standing Stones, then use town as a base for Land of the Beardies History House Museum and the national parks east of the tablelands. Washpool National Park is the strongest nature trip, with World Heritage-listed rainforest in a part of New South Wales many travellers rush past.

Glen Innes is not a polished resort town. It is a useful, characterful high-country base for travellers who like back roads, local museums, fossicking, and cold clear air.
