Echo Point

Dramatic clifftop lookout over the Three Sisters and the Jamison Valley

Echo Point sits on the escarpment edge just south of Katoomba town centre, about 2 km from the railway station, and gives you an unobstructed view down into the Jamison Valley. The Three Sisters — three sandstone pillars rising from the valley floor — are directly in front of you, and on clear days the eucalyptus-haze blue that gives the Blue Mountains their name hangs over the ridgelines in every direction.

It's popular, and the viewing platform can get crowded during weekends and school holidays. Come in the early morning or late afternoon for better light and smaller crowds. The Giant Stairway leads down from the platform into the valley, connecting to a network of walking tracks that pass through rainforest at the base of the cliffs.

A story
The Gundungurra tell of three sisters — Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo — who were turned to stone by a cleverman (a man of special power) to protect them during a battle with the Nepean people. He was killed before he could reverse the magic, and the three sisters have stood there ever since, waiting.
