Day Trips

The Blue Mountains are a destination for day trips from Sydney, but from Katoomba there are also excellent half-day and full-day excursions within the mountains themselves.

Leura (3 km east, accessible by train or a 40-minute walk along the cliff path) is the prettiest of the mountain villages, with a main street of well-kept heritage shopfronts, garden nurseries, antique shops and cafes. Leuralla, a federation-era house with elaborate gardens and a toy and railway museum, is worth the entry fee.

Wentworth Falls (10 km east by train) gives access to the Valley of the Waters, one of the best walking circuits in the Blue Mountains. The track passes multiple lookouts and waterfalls before looping back along the Undercliff track. Allow four to five hours for the full circuit.

Blackheath (13 km north by train) is quieter and less visited than Katoomba, with excellent access to the Grose Valley — larger and wilder than the Jamison Valley. Govetts Leap lookout is the dramatic highlight, with views down a near-vertical cliff to the valley floor 300 metres below.

Jenolan Caves (75 km by road) are among the most impressive limestone cave systems in Australia. The drive from Katoomba involves a spectacular descent through the Blue Mountains. Access is by car only; no direct bus service.
