Oberon

Cool-climate town on the western Blue Mountains, with gardens, caves, trout water, and high-country forest.

Oberon sits on the cold western side of the Blue Mountains, where the country opens into pine forest, trout streams, sheep paddocks, and high granite ridges. It is a practical little town rather than a polished resort, but the surrounding landscape gives it a stronger travel case than its size suggests.

The headline sights are outside the town centre. Mayfield Garden is one of Australia's largest cool-climate gardens, Kanangra-Boyd National Park has big Blue Mountains escarpment views without the Katoomba crowds, and Jenolan Caves is one of the country's classic cave systems. Access to Jenolan has been disrupted by road damage and closures, so check conditions before building a trip around it.

Oberon works best with a car and a flexible day. Come for a garden morning, a lookout afternoon, or a slow loop through the plateau when the weather is clear and cold enough to remind you that this part of New South Wales has real seasons.
