Bondi Icebergs

Iconic ocean pool cut into the rocks at Bondi's southern end

Address 1 Notts Avenue, Bondi Beach

The Bondi Icebergs pool is one of the most photographed sights in Australia: a pair of swimming pools cut into the rock platform at the southern end of Bondi Beach, where waves break straight over the lip and into the lanes. The Icebergs Club has been here since 1929, founded by local lifesavers who wanted to keep fit through winter — the name comes from their famous tradition of swimming year-round, with blocks of ice once thrown into the water to make a point.

Visitors can pay a small fee to swim a lap in the pool, an unforgettable experience when the surf is up. Above it sits the Icebergs Dining Room and Bar, one of Sydney's best-located restaurants, and the more casual club bistro, both with full-length views back along the beach. Even without swimming, the viewing terrace at the start of the Bondi to Coogee walk is worth the short stroll from the sand.
