Casuarina Coastal Reserve protects a long sweep of Darwin's northern shoreline, where sandy beaches, mangroves, dunes, and patches of monsoon vine forest sit surprisingly close to the suburbs. It is one of the easiest places in the city to get a feel for the Top End coast without joining a tour or driving deep into the bush.
The reserve is good for walking, birdwatching, and watching the sky change colour at the end of the day. Swimming needs local caution because northern waters can mean box jellyfish and crocodile risk, especially in the wet season, but the tracks and beach edges are rewarding even when the water is strictly for looking at.
