The Great Western Hotel Steakhouse

The Great Western Hotel on Stanley Street is a Rockhampton institution, and the steakhouse in its restaurant section serves what the town is famous for: Rockhampton beef, cooked properly. The steaks are large, the prices are fair, and the atmosphere is unapologetically country Queensland. The building itself is heritage-listed, with a wide veranda and the solid timber-and-corrugated-iron construction of the 19th-century Queensland pub.

If you are going to eat a steak in Rockhampton — and you probably should — this is the most authentic context in which to do it. The hotel also hosts live music and has a beer garden.

A story
The Great Western has been part of Rockhampton's social fabric since the 1860s. It became famous as the venue for bull riding and rodeo events held in the hotel yard — a tradition that continued well into the 20th century. The steakhouse maintains the connection to the city's cattle heritage that the building has always embodied.
