Rockhampton rewards visitors who look beyond the highway stopover reputation. The Quay Street heritage precinct is one of the best intact Victorian streetscapes in Queensland; the Capricorn Caves are genuinely spectacular; and the Botanic Gardens are a calm surprise in a town better known for cattle than horticulture. Mount Archer and the Capricorn Coast are easy half-days from town.
