Great Keppel Island

Great Keppel Island lies about 15 kilometres offshore from Rosslyn Bay, which is itself about 45 minutes from Rockhampton by car. Ferries run from Rosslyn Bay Marina several times a day, making the island a practical day trip or overnight stop. The island has 17 beaches, clear water with good snorkelling over fringing coral reefs, and walking tracks through the national park interior.

The island is significantly quieter than more heavily promoted Queensland island resorts — there is one resort complex and limited other infrastructure, which suits visitors who want beaches without crowds. The snorkelling around Monkey Beach and Leekes Beach is the best near the main ferry wharf. Overnight camping is possible in the national park, though permits must be booked in advance. Water taxis can also be arranged from Rockhampton for groups.

A story
Great Keppel has 17 beaches on an island of just 14 square kilometres — more beaches per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in Queensland. Most of them see very few visitors on any given day outside peak school holiday periods.
