Cattle House

Cattle House at 180 Quay Street is a heritage-listed former bank building that represents the cattle wealth which replaced gold as Rockhampton's economic foundation. The building dates from the late 19th century and is one of the better examples of the commercial architecture that lines Quay Street. The stonework is particularly fine.

As with most of the Quay Street buildings, the interior is not always accessible, but the facades are the point — this is architecture meant to convey solidity and confidence, and it still does. The cattle industry connection is everywhere in Rockhampton, from the life-size bronze bull sculptures at the city's entrance points to the steakhouses on the main streets, and Cattle House is part of that story.

A story
The name tells the story: this was where the money from the cattle trade was handled, and its solid presence on Quay Street reflects the central role of the beef industry in Rockhampton's identity. The Fitzroy region runs more cattle than most Australian states — around four million head — and this building was part of the commercial infrastructure that made that trade possible.
