Yorktown Square

A converted warehouse precinct with restaurants, cafés, and independent shops

Yorktown Square is a short block of 19th-century commercial buildings on Wellington Street that have been converted into a small food and retail precinct. The warehouses and merchant premises date from the 1860s to 1880s, and the conversion was done with unusual care for the streetscape: the colonial-era façades are intact, and the interiors have kept the original timber floors, ironwork columns, and brick walls.

The square is most popular for its coffee shops and lunch spots — it is the go-to destination for the city's café culture and fills up with office workers and visitors on weekday afternoons. There are also some independent shops selling Tasmanian products, art prints, and clothing. In summer, tables spill onto the footpath. It is a good starting or ending point for a walk through the city centre.
