Launceston is a city worth slowing down in. The Victorian streetscapes and Cataract Gorge together make for an unusually rewarding day. City Park is the surprising green heart of the CBD, with its colony of Japanese macaques. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery covers Tasmanian natural history and art across two sites.
The Old Umbrella Shop on George Street is a Victorian time capsule that still sells umbrellas. Franklin House south of the city is the finest Georgian house in northern Tasmania. The National Automobile Museum has a rotating collection of vintage cars — the exhibits change regularly because all vehicles are privately owned. Yorktown Square is the restored warehouse district good for coffee and browsing.
