The headland at the mouth of the Mersey River is the most atmospheric spot in Devonport. Walking trails wind around the bluff with open views across Bass Strait, and on a clear day you can see the full sweep of the northern coast. The lighthouse, built in 1889, is a solid stone structure and the local landmark — it still operates. If your timing is right, this is a good place to watch the Spirit of Tasmania ferry making its way into port, an oddly moving sight after the overnight crossing.
