Huon Valley

Apple-growing valley south of Hobart, with cider sheds, river towns, forests, and cool-climate wine

The Huon Valley is the soft, productive country south of Hobart, where the Huon River runs through orchards, hop fields, cider sheds, small towns, and forested hills. Huonville itself is the service town, but the travel appeal belongs to the valley as a whole.

This was once one of Australia's great apple districts, and that identity still shapes the visit. Willie Smith's Apple Shed turns the old packing-shed story into cider, food, and a small museum; nearby cellar doors show how serious the valley has become about cool-climate wine.

The valley also works as a gentle day out from Hobart. Franklin has a fine wooden-boat tradition on the river, Cygnet brings galleries and markets, and the road south keeps pulling you toward Geeveston, Hartz Mountains, and the wet forests beyond.

Things to Do

The Huon Valley is best treated as a slow loop from Hobart: cider, wine, river towns, farm stalls, and a little time by the Huon River. The forest sights around Geeveston sit close by, but the valley itself is about produce and place.
