Zeehan

Former silver-mining town on Tasmania's West Coast, with a deep museum and tunnel walks.

Zeehan is an old silver town in the wet, mountainous country of Tasmania's West Coast. It was once one of the busiest towns in Tasmania, with mines, grand hotels, theatres, and enough money passing through to make people call it the Silver City.

The boom has long gone, and that is part of why Zeehan is worth stopping for. Main Street is quiet, the hills press close, and the best sights all point back to the hard mining years: the West Coast Heritage Centre, the old Gaiety Theatre, and the Zeehan Pioneer Cemetery.

The town also works as a good inland stop between Strahan, Queenstown, Rosebery, and the Tarkine road. If you have time for one short walk, go out to the Spray Tunnel, where an abandoned mining tramway tunnel cuts through the hill and glow worms gather in the dark.
