Lakes Entrance is exactly named: the place where the Gippsland Lakes cut through the coastal dunes and meet the Southern Ocean. The town is a working fishing port and holiday base on the edge of Ninety Mile Beach, with jetties, pelicans, lake cruises, and surf all within a short walk.
This is not a polished resort. Its appeal is practical and outdoorsy: cross the footbridge to the beach, walk the channel entrance, join a wildlife cruise, or head west to Nyerimilang for views over the lakes. The seafood is fresh, the foreshore is busy in summer, and the light over the water can be lovely.
Lakes Entrance makes most sense as a coastal stop in Victoria's far east, especially if you want a day around water rather than another inland town.
