A superb interactive museum in Ballarat that recreates a gold-mining township of the 1850s. You can pan for real gold in the creek, tour underground mines, and wander a main street lined with working blacksmiths, bakers, and period shops staffed by costumed volunteers. The evening sound-and-light show, Blood on the Southern Cross, dramatises the Eureka Rebellion. Allow a full day. About 90 minutes from Melbourne by car or train.
