Rutherglen

North-east Victorian wine town known for fortified Muscat, Durif, and gold-rush streets.

Rutherglen is a small wine town in north-east Victoria, near the Murray River and the New South Wales border. It began as a gold-rush settlement, but its lasting reason to visit is wine: especially rich fortified Muscat and Topaque, plus Durif reds that taste bigger than the town looks.

This is not a place for a checklist of monuments. Rutherglen works as a slow day of cellar doors, old verandahs, country pubs, and short walks around town. The main street still has enough goldfields character to keep it from feeling like a generic service stop.

Wine is the draw, and you need a car or bike to get the best from it. Start at the visitor centre for maps and tasting advice, then choose one or two estates rather than trying to rush the whole district.

Eating Out

Food in Rutherglen is tied closely to the wine region: pies and cafes in town, with fuller meals at estates and nearby cellar doors.
