Moree

Northern New South Wales spa town on Kamilaroi country, known for artesian baths and Freedom Ride history.

Moree is a northern New South Wales town with one clear reason to stop: hot artesian water from the Great Artesian Basin. The pools make it a classic road-trip pause between the coast, the New England tableland, and the inland routes toward Lightning Ridge.

There is more here than a soak. Moree is on Kamilaroi country, and the town's history includes both deep Aboriginal culture and a hard chapter in Australia's civil-rights story. In 1965 the Freedom Ride confronted segregation at the Moree Baths, forcing a national audience to look at racism in country towns.

Moree is still a service centre for cotton, grain, and surrounding farms, so do not expect a polished heritage village. But if you are already crossing this part of NSW, the baths, Aboriginal centre, art museum, and big-sky plains make it worth more than a fuel stop.

Things to Do

Moree's best stops are close to the centre: the artesian baths, Aboriginal cultural collections, regional art, and a handful of heritage buildings that speak to its role as an inland service town.
