WA Museum Geraldton

The Western Australian Museum Geraldton covers the natural and human history of the Mid West coast, with particular depth on the region's most dramatic stories: the 1629 wreck of the Dutch East India Company ship Batavia on the Abrolhos Islands, and the loss of the HMAS Sydney in 1941. The Batavia display is exceptional — the ship ran aground off the Abrolhos while carrying a large and socially complicated group of Dutch colonists, and the mutiny and massacre that followed became one of the darkest episodes in colonial history. The museum presents the story with the recovered artefacts and a careful reconstruction of the hull section.

The museum also covers the Indigenous history of the region, the pastoral and mining industries, and the natural environment of the mid-coast. It is a well-resourced regional museum that treats its subjects seriously. Entry is free. Located on Museum Place near the foreshore.
