Hutt Lagoon is the pink lake that shows up in almost every Kalbarri road-trip photograph, but it is more interesting when you see how changeable it is. Depending on light, cloud, season, and salinity, the water can look rose, salmon, lilac, or almost ordinary. The colour comes from algae and salt-loving organisms rather than any trick of the camera.
The lagoon sits near Port Gregory, north of Kalbarri, and is easiest to visit by car as part of the coastal drive. Midday sun often gives the strongest colour, though late afternoon can be better for photographs. Do not expect a developed attraction with paths and interpretation everywhere; the pleasure is pulling over, looking across the salt water, and watching the colour shift as the wind moves across it.
