Western Australia's oldest inland town, York was founded in 1831 and has barely put a foot wrong architecturally since. The main street, Avon Terrace, runs along the Avon River and is lined with well-preserved Victorian and Federation buildings that today house antique dealers, art galleries, and cafes. It is 97 kilometres east of Perth — close enough for a day trip, quiet enough to feel like a genuine escape.
The town attracts people who like to slow down. You can spend a morning poking around the antique shops and the fine furniture galleries, have lunch at one of the riverside cafes (the restored railway carriage by the river is a local landmark), and spend the afternoon walking along the Avon. The heritage buildings are not just facades — York is a working town with real character, not a theme park version of one.
If you are coming from Perth, the drive through the Darling Ranges and down into the Avon Valley is worth the trip on its own. Spring, when the wildflowers are out, is the best time to visit.
