Daylesford is Victoria's classic mineral-springs escape, about 90 minutes northwest of Melbourne. It has the familiar bones of a goldfields town, but its present-day mood is softer: spas, galleries, gardens, lake walks, weekend lunches, and a long-running reputation as one of regional Victoria's most open-minded small towns.
The place is easy to enjoy without a checklist. Walk Lake Daylesford, climb Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens, then spend time at The Convent, a former 19th-century mansion turned gallery. The wider spa country begins almost immediately at Hepburn Springs.
Daylesford is not built for rushing. It works as a slow day or weekend from Melbourne, especially if you want a country town with food, art, mineral water, and enough landscape to keep the day from becoming only lunch.
