Waipara is a small North Canterbury wine village where State Highway 1 meets the road inland to Hanmer Springs. The township itself is modest, but the valley around it has enough good cellar doors, old railway atmosphere, and soft vineyard country to make a spare day from Christchurch feel well spent.
Pinot noir and riesling are the local calling cards. The wineries are close enough that the day can be simple: a slow lunch, one or two tastings, and a ride on the Weka Pass Railway if your timing matches its steam-running days.
Waipara is best treated as a compact country stop rather than a destination with urban sights. Come for wine, North Canterbury air, and the odd pleasure of a steam train leaving from a tiny rural station.
