Peleliu is essentially an open-air museum of the Pacific War, set on a small tropical island ringed by world-class reefs. The historical sites are best visited with a local guide — much of the interior is still littered with unexploded ordnance and the original maps and signage are largely gone. The diving stands on its own and is reason enough to make the trip.
