Bonegi Beach

About 12 kilometres west of Honiara, Bonegi Beach is one of the best easily accessible dive and snorkel sites near the capital. Just offshore lie two Japanese transport ships sunk during the Guadalcanal campaign — the Hirokawa Maru and the Kinugawa Maru — in shallow enough water to be partly visible from the surface.

The Kinugawa Maru's bow actually breaks the surface, making it one of the more dramatic wreck sights in the Pacific without needing scuba gear. Local operators run trips from Honiara, and the beach itself is pleasant for swimming. The surrounding reef is intact and the fish life around the wrecks is rich.
