Mataniko Falls

The Mataniko Falls are a short hike from the edge of Honiara, upriver from the Mataniko River mouth. The river itself runs through the eastern part of the city before entering the sea — in 1942 it marked one of the main defensive lines of the American perimeter. Today the gorge above the falls is used as a swimming spot by locals.

The walk takes about an hour each way from the edge of the city. A local guide is recommended — the path is not always well marked and the river crossings can be tricky after rain. The falls themselves drop into a deep pool, and the gorge is strikingly beautiful. It is the best natural escape from the city accessible without a vehicle.
