Skanderbeg Museum

Dramatic 1981 museum to the Albanian national hero, designed by Enver Hoxha's daughter

Inside Krujë Castle, the National History Museum "Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu" is one of the most visited museums in Albania. It is housed in a striking concrete-and-stone bunker-like building dating from 1981, designed by Pranvera Hoxha — the dictator's daughter — with severely monumental proportions and a great staircase that takes you up through the floors of Skanderbeg's life.

The displays are sometimes dated but rich with arms, armour, banners, frescoes and replicas (including Skanderbeg's famous horned helmet, the original of which is in Vienna). The view of the coastal plain from the top floor is, on a clear day, the best in the castle. Audio guides in English available.

A story
The museum was designed in 1981 by Pirro Vaso and Pranvera Hoxha — the dictator's daughter — and it is one of the few examples in Europe of openly monumental late-communist architecture preserved on its original site. Inside the dramatic shell, the curation is unapologetic: this is Albania's foundational story, told as it would be told to a primary-school class.
