Getting There

Shkodër is in the far north of Albania, around 100 kilometres from Tirana and 30 kilometres from the Montenegrin border crossing at Hani i Hotit.

By bus and furgon: Frequent minibuses ("furgons") and full-size buses run from Tirana's North & South Bus Terminal to Shkodër throughout the day; journey time is 2 to 2.5 hours and the fare is around €5. From Tirana you can connect to virtually anywhere else in Albania.

To Montenegro: Direct buses run from Shkodër to Ulcinj (1 hour) and Budva/Kotor (2.5–3 hours), useful for travellers cutting north along the Adriatic. The border crossing is straightforward; have your passport ready.

By air: The nearest airport is Tirana International (TIA, 95 km south). There are no commercial flights into Shkodër itself.

By train: Albanian railways once ran through Shkodër but service is sporadic and unreliable. Treat the train as a curiosity rather than a practical option.

By car: The four-lane SH1 highway connects Tirana to Shkodër; the drive is straightforward and takes 90 minutes outside rush hour.
