Cape Rodon (Kepi i Rodonit)

A long sandy beach and a ruined Skanderbeg-era castle, an hour and a half's drive west of Tirana. The cape itself is dramatic — a low headland of red cliffs running into the Adriatic — and the small church of Saint Anthony just inland is a popular pilgrimage in summer. Most travellers come for an afternoon: a swim, a walk to the castle ruins, lunch at the half-dozen seafood shacks above the sand.

The road in is unpaved and slow but passable in any normal car. A good day trip from Tirana for travellers who want the coast without the developed clutter of Durrës.

A story
The fortress at Cape Rodon was built by Skanderbeg himself in 1452 as a refuge in case his uplands fell to the Ottomans. Captured and demolished, rebuilt, and demolished again, the surviving walls now run straight down into the Adriatic — eroded by storms, half-swallowed by the sea.
