A medieval castle 18 km south of Tirana, perched on a rocky outcrop above the Erzeni river. The site has been fortified since Justinian's time, but the surviving towers and walls are Skanderbeg-era — his sister, the legend goes, held the castle while her brother fought Ottomans in the north.
The visit is short — half an hour for the walls and the small restaurant in the keep — but the drive there passes through striking landscape and the view from the battlements is genuinely impressive. A common stop on the way to or from Berat.
