Earthquake Memorial Park

Memorial park to the 25,000 who died in the 1988 Spitak earthquake

A memorial park in the northern part of the city, dedicated to the victims of the December 7, 1988 earthquake. The earthquake killed somewhere between 25,000 and 50,000 people across northern Armenia — the exact figure remains disputed — and devastated Gyumri, then known as Leninakan, more than any other city. The park sits near the site of some of the worst destruction and includes monuments to the dead, photographs, and a small museum.

Coming here is sobering in a way that visiting the city alone might not be. Gyumri has rebuilt with determination, but signs of the earthquake remain in empty lots where buildings once stood and in the prefabricated housing that was meant to be temporary and became permanent. The memorial grounds the resilience you see elsewhere in the city in the scale of what the city had to survive.

A story
The 1988 Spitak earthquake struck on December 7 at 11:41 in the morning, when schools and factories were full. In Gyumri — then called Leninakan — between 10,000 and 25,000 people died and over 200,000 lost their homes. The earthquake came less than three years before the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the slow and chaotic relief effort accelerated Armenian disillusionment with Moscow in ways that were visible in the independence movement that followed.
